Angela Collura Ames
Chief Executive Officer
Angela Collura Ames became the owner and CEO of SM Engineering in 2025 after nearly a decade of progressive leadership within the company. Since joining in 2016, she has held roles across client services and operations, ultimately serving as COO before stepping into her current role. Angela leads the strategic direction of SM Engineering, a firm established in 1982 that specializes in utility cost reduction for manufacturers and residential property management companies. She oversees day-to-day operations, financial management, and client engagement, with a focus on delivering measurable results and long-term value. Angela began her professional career in restaurant management, where she built a strong foundation in operational efficiency and customer relations. Her aptitude for analytics and problem solving was developed early on through a strong foundation in mathematics. As a competitive bridge player throughout her youth, Angela earned several academic and travel-based scholarships, representing the United States internationally and honing the strategic thinking skills that continue to guide her work today.
Satya Garg, MSME
Founder / Board of Directors
Satya graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1968 with an MS in Mechanical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Mechanical and Electrical Engineer in Minnesota. Prior to starting SM Engineering in 1982, Mr. Garg was Manager of Engineering for Planmark, a subsidiary of Super Valu Stores. After graduating from University of Minnesota, Mr. Garg started his career with “Michand Cooley, Hallberg, Erickson & Associates”, one of the most reputed consulting company in Minnesota. He had the opportunity to work with Robert Michand on many interesting projects such as Target stores, conceptual design of mechanical systems for IDS center and troubleshooting HVAC systems at IDS tower. Mr. Garg joined SuperValu in 1974 as project manager for supermarket design and distribution centers. He introduced many new concepts in HVAC design to take advantage of free cooling from refrigerated cases and also using heat from compressors to heat the supermarkets. Supermarkets require different approach because of large load per sqft of refrigeration. He also introduced new concepts of heating large distribution centers. Mr. Garg was responsible for putting a comprehensive energy management system for SuperValu stores. He won the Governor’s award for putting an energy management program for Super Valu stores. Mr. Garg saw the opportunity to reduce utility costs for Supermarkets without any operation changes. He expanded the same concept to manufacturing companies, apartment complexes, nursing homes and many others.
Anthony Ames II, Esq.
Principal Analyst - Utility Law & Technical Studies
Anthony Ames serves as SM Engineering’s Principal Analyst – Utility Law & Technical Studies, where he leads legal research, technical audit review, and data systems support across the company’s core programs. A licensed attorney, Anthony earned his Juris Doctorate from Western New England College School of Law in 2009 and joined SM Engineering in 2016. Anthony specializes in interpreting State utility statutes and tax code language to determine client eligibility for refunds and exemptions. He also conducts on-site audits and provides in-depth review of predominant use studies completed by other field engineers, ensuring each report is accurate, defensible, and aligned with applicable legal requirements. In addition to his legal and audit responsibilities, Anthony supports SME’s internal data systems through SQL list management and process improvements that enhance efficiency and data integrity across departments. Originally from the Minneapolis suburbs, Anthony returned to the Twin Cities after law school. Outside of work, he enjoys curling, woodworking, and strategy board games.
Nick Zech, P.E.
Field Engineer
Nick graduated from North Dakota State in 2002 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He is a Registered Electrical Engineer in Minnesota as well as various other states. Nick has 15+ years of experience in the design of various industrial/manufacturing, commercial, and government projects. System design includes power, lighting, fire alarm, and other miscellaneous systems including photovoltaic systems.

Mary Ann joined SM Engineering in 2020. She holds degrees in Psychology and Community Counseling. Her relational and office skills enable her to work efficiently as a Client Relations Assistant at SM Engineering. Mary Ann enjoys reading, baking, and gardening.
Adrienne Notts
Administration
Adrienne joined SM Engineering in 2021. She has several years of office experience in print media, manufacturing and sales. Adrienne is a graduate of Mankato State University.
Laichia Vang
Administrative Assistant
Laichia joined Sm Engineering in 2025. She has a background in education, nonprofit work, and federal programs, and holds a degree in political science with a concentration in race and ethnic studies. Laichia supports SM Engineering’s team through coordination, communication, and day-to-day operational tasks. Outside of work, she enjoys writing, reading, and night walks.
